Up

I took the kids to see Up yesterday. Yet another hit from our friends at Pixar, definitely in their top five.

If you guys haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend watching the Disney Digital 3-D version. I was a bit apprehensive at first, I thought they might have used gimmicky 3D effects like in those older 3D movies (Jaws 3-D anyone?) but it really helps you get totally immersed in the story. The film lends itself to some wonderful outdoor and high altitude scenes which benefit greatly from the 3D presentation.

The only bummer was that I was a bit late and just missed the Toy Story 3 trailer. Oh well, I guess that's what the Apple trailers website is for.

Star Trek

I saw Star Trek yesterday after work and wow I need to see it again! Nicely done J.J.!

Okay, so I took longer than I thought I would getting back to this blog and Rob has already posted no spoilers!

I'll just say, good story/plot, good casting, good music, good acting and good effects! Good?! It was awesome!

There was one scene that I can remember that didn't really need to be in it, or at least didn't need to see as much as was revealed in it, but other than that one scene, definitely worth buying when it comes out on blue ray. And definitely worth seeing again while it's still in the theatres! Go see it!

Don't Bet on Duke

Rob beat me to the post, as I did hear about the rumors earlier this week but I didn't want to say anything until it was official (despite this short comment), but apparently it's true.

This picture was reported taken yesterday, right before they saw a screening of the latest Star Trek movie. If you are wondering why they shut down after all these years, here is a good explanation.

Probably the funniest thing to come out of all this is this receipt dated 8/13/2001 from a faithful fan that put down a 10 dollar deposit at GameStop. I wonder if he gets his money back now?

Duke Nukem developer goes bust

Wow!

It was always a mystery to me how 3D Realms could stay in business for so long. Oh well, I wonder if the game can still be released in some version or another.

Myst for iPhone/iPod Touch

As you may have already read last week, Cyan has ported Myst for the iPhone/iPod Touch, a game first released for the Mac/PC in 1993. Because I'm a huge Myst fan I didn't hesitate to drop $5.99 for a copy. The game is a whopping 727 MB download from the Apple iTunes App store but my 32 GB Touch has plenty of room to spare.

It was Leo Laporte's pick of the week on the latest MacBreak Weekly along with his comment of "It's still too damn hard!" I've only played it for a few minutes but Myst is a perfect match for the touchscreen interface. I'm somewhat surprised that the reviews are so positive because there was always a vocal minority in years past that never understood it's popularity in comparison to FPS's like Doom.
