More Pirates...

MousePlanet had a pretty good review of the updated Pirates attraction at Disneyland, complete with an edited video of the changes.

For all the doom and gloom predictions of the uber-fans, Disney has done an extremely respectful job in melding the film and attraction storylines. The traditional Pirates music is still dominant in the attraction, classic scenes have been left alone, favorite characters like the auctioneer and red head are right where they were when the ride closed for refurbishment in March, and the added Pirates film story elements feel like natural extensions of the existing premise. In short, you have nothing to fear from these pirates.

The Return of Jor-El

While catching up on the latest CG news, I came across this link regarding the "resurrection" of Marlon Brando's character in Superman Returns.

Even though the techinque has been used in film and TV for quite some time, I still found it interesting to watch. The wizards behind this are Rhythm & Hues Studios located just a few miles down from my place.

As a side note, an interesting optical illusion is created when the head model rotates 180 degrees to show the head inverted- just like the walking portion of Disneyland's Haunted Mansion. You can see another great example of this effect here.

Yo ho yo ho...

SPOILER ALERT! DO NOT READ IF YOU DON'T WANNA KNOW PIRATES CHANGES!!!

That being said, this is a brief recap of what I saw today for the cast memeber preview of Pirates!

First off, no can do on the pictures! There were cm's standing around inside the attarction looking for fellow cm's with cams of any sort. Also, they were definitely keeping an eye from above with the 13 infra-red cams throught the attraction as well. Yes, there are 13 infra-red cams, but under normal circumstances, they do not really enforce the no camera rule. Most of the time.

So, now for the few changes:

When you come thru the doors, notice the new map and scene on the lil isle the boats go around. Also, upon boarding, it was much darker than it used to be. Not sure if it was just for cm's and not fully lit or if it will stay that way. The night time scene in the bayou is now purple also, not the deep blue. And being as dark as it was, it's much more difficult to see a lot of the details from the launch to the skull and bones talkiing. Listen also to some dialogue changes.

After the drops, it should be easy to notice minor details, like shiny new swords where the skeles are and such. The noticable change at first to me was the change in music. It's still the same tune, but not the original track.

New treasure is in the treasure room, including the chest from the first pirates movie, with the cursed coins. Then comes the first truly noticable addition/change.

The long dark tunnel with the ghostly voice is still there, but it's not quite so long anymore! Not because they shortened it, but because in the middle of that dark passage they added a mist screen, where a water fall is projected onto it. Cool effect, but not the highlight! Upon a que from the ghostly voice, such as on the part I heard, "Dead men tell no tales!," the ghostly image of Davy Jones appears on the mist screen, saying, "Dead men do tell tales!" It looked great to me! Nice effect!

Next up, the pirate cap't. on the ship is now Barbossa. Pretty noticable change, but also in my opinion, un-neccessary. Another thing that caught my attention were some big ballons, which probably are there for the movie premiere only, but we'll see. I say that only because they were darkened in the background. They also sharpened and relit the shadow fighting pirates on the top left city wall. Looked good.

The dunking scene has a big change if you listen to the new dialogue (again I reitterate lotta new dialogue throughout and easily noticable) and then come upon Cap't. Jack Sparrow hiding/peeking around boxes and stuff. It looks so much like him it's scary! The animation is a lot better on him than the others also, you can tell it's a new animatronic.

Most of the next scenes were about the same, saw another balloon up high and almost hidden, and then you get to the priates chasing/being chased scene. One change for the better in that scene: no more food! The pirates now have loot or are trying to get the loot! Also, no more cat in the barrel with the dog barking, but now the dog barking at , yes you guessed it, a hiding Jack Sparrow, who pops up every now and then to look over the shoulder of the sitting drunk pirate. Again, new dialogue, and he's holding a treasure map.

Minor changes for the next scenes until you get to the end. Gone are the 2 pirates pushing and pulling the bag full of loot where the pirates are shooting at each other. What's there you ask? A new room filled with treasure with Jack again, this time sitting holding some loot and singing drunkenly the main theme, with comments here and there. This animatronic for some reason didn't look quite much like him as the other 2 do. No matter. The animation on him is great!

Well, that about does it I think. I forgot the actual opening for guests, but it's probably this week, or just before the movie comes out. You'll have to make a trip before my blackout days start up in July!

Episode 1 - Part 2

This is not going to be my full review of Half Life 2 - Episode One, since I have not finished the game yet. It's taking me a long time to complete it because I only get to game during my lunch break from work (which is about 10 mins a day when I'm lucky). From what little I played I can definately give it a big 2 thumbs up. I just wanted to let you know so you all get a chance to pick it up at BestBuy for only $14.99 (sale ends this Saturday).

It's all the fun of Half Life 2 with better graphics. It has the same great textures as before but with more HDR style bloom effects a'la "The Lost Coast" demo as well as more bump mapping (or is it normal mapping? Rob where's that blog???) that seemed to be missing from the original HL2. It also features lots of excellent physics which you get to play around with because of the gravity gun. How can you not like a game with screaming zombies caught on fire? The animation of the characters seem more fluid as well.

Slipstreaming Made Easy

For a soon to be revealed reason, I ended up reformating my Windows hard drive and installing a fresh copy of Windows XP Professional. It's been a long time since I've done that because I forgot how much of a pain it was to install Windows on a SATA hard drive.

Microsoft never included SATA drivers in any of their XP installations (even SP2) so you have to download the correct drivers for your hard drive controller, put them on a floppy disk and press F6 during the installation process so Windows knows you have extra drivers to install.

One problem I had was that I didn't know exactly what SATA controller I had on my Dell and even their support website didn't tell me. I ended up having to go to Intel's website and download the SATA floppy utility based on my 925x chipset. Their utility bundles about 10 drivers for each SATA controller that they make so I had to pick the correct one. If you guess incorrectly you have to reboot and start the installation process over again. Well about after the 5th try I got it right and was able to install XP.

The next issue I had was that even after XP was installed, Windows didn't recognize my video card, sound card, or network card. Well since I don't have a modem or any dial up service I needed my network card operational so I could connect to the internet and download the rest of my drivers. I ended up using my flash card from my digital camera to transfer the correct Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet drivers from my Mac over to my PC.

I could have avoided all this nonsense by creating a slipstreamed CD of Windows XP. I've done this before when merging a service pack but it required following a lot of steps that someone posted on the internet and I didn't really know how to add drivers.

After some quick searching on Google I found a wonderful utility that walks you through the process called nLite. Within a few minutes I created a bootable ISO (which I then burned on my Mac) that contained my SATA and network drivers along with some special Windows customizations that I normally would perform after a regular install (like getting rid of that annoying Windows XP Tour popup). The best part is that nLite is totally free. I highly recommend it for your next wax on wax off project.

New Blog

Well I had a nice long blog created today but it just got deleted. Apparently when I hit the spell checker button, Windows asked if I wanted to unblock the pop up feature from this site. I said yes and then my blog was wiped clean.

Mac and me

Well, after some time passing since I bought my Pro, and after today with my pc using winxp, all I can say is... I LOVE MY MAC! Today after work, I turned on my pc, and lo and behold, something that never happens happened! Yes, xp locked up! Can you imagine that?! A pc running xp locking up?! It's unheard of! Countless hours later (ok, I can count them, but it feels like countless hours later!), I'm still re-installing, that's right, RE-INSTALLING!!!!

Of course I was able to keep myself occupied by watching RedvsBlue, the dvd, and after 2 dvd's worth, I still can't get the re-install to work on the pc and need help. Time to make a phone call. I've more than likely lost all my info on my pc. OMG!!! Why oh why didn't I take the blue pill?!

The only thing giving me any comfort in technology is my old trustworthy friend, my long time companion you all once scoffed and mocked me from, a real survivor and contstant that has stood by me time after time, my Mac. Sniff! Oh the beauty of this wonderful thing! So sturdy, so easy, so dependable, so good to look at! And now, with the Pro in my hands, so new and powerful!!!

I just shut off my pc, no progress made on it, files gone, frustation setting in, if not for my Mac! You boys! Do you remember mocking me for having a Mac?! How many years of that went by before all 3 of you (4 if you count my bro) finally saw what I saw and broke down and bought one yourselves?! Yes, I did end up buying a pc, but not for anything other than playing games that are not available on macs.

But now! Oh, the real beauty of it all! Now with this new machine, there will be no need to get another pc ever again! Boot Camp FTW!!! I can't wait for the desktop verision of the new mactell machines, where I'll be able to put in the newest graphics card! Imagine the raw power of that machine now! No, I will not be buying one when it does come out, money is another issue there! But rest assured, at some point, I will be getting one after I've saved for it!

On a side note, Marcos did get to see the new Pro at the party, but with Murphy's law, it lagged when I wanted to show it off! Blah blah blah! That only happens when you show off your newest toys and you all go thru it and you know it! Anyway, Pro all the way! Marcos loved it, and he agrees with me about the best feature: the magsafe power supply! By far the funnest neatest part of any computer ever! It's so fun having magnetic power supplies! Woot!

Well, till the pc decides to run again, I'll be using my Pro only, and also my iMac so it won't get lonely...

PA Visit Part 2

On April 8th, Dave posted a blog of Kruddler's recent trip to PA. Dave mistakenly thought that Ari and Tu Tu weren't there but on careful inspection, you can clearly see them playing in the second story window.

MacBook Pro Hands On

I finally got to get a live demo of the new MacBook Pro, not from an Apple store but rather from the Kruddler.

It's a beautiful design, sleek and polished. The feature that impressed me and the Kruddler most was not the wide 17" display or the new Intel Core Duo processors but rather the MagSafe connector. You guys really have to try this! It magnetically grabs the connector with a surprisingly firm grip. To release it you can pull from any angle. I thought I was going to break the connector but Kruddler assured me that it was safe.

Hannah's Birthday

The girl's and I had a blast yesterday at Hannah's 7th Birthday party, held yesterday at Vallejo manor. There was lot's for the kids to do, which included face painting, goofy's bounce house, Hawaiian dance and musical lessons, plus a wonderful Polynesian dance display. The kruddler captured everything on video but I posted some pictures at my website. I used iWeb to create the website, but I'm not sure why every apostrophe resulted in the weird €Â™ symbol. I have to look into that later.

I also got to see Kruddler's new 17" Mac Book Pro. Ahh such a sweet system! He even demoed Boot Camp for me as well as gave me a peek at his new Hitatchi HDTV.

Boot Camp

This is a long overdue blog about Apple's latest added feature to their Intel based computers called Boot Camp. I know that my blogs have been very sporadic lately, but every since Annel got her new job she comes home around 6:00 pm now which leaves me very little dedicated computer time.

Let me first say congratulations to the Kruddler. He had the foresight to predict that his recent MacBook Pro purchase would yield such wonderful features such as dual booting OS X and Windows, as well as using virtualization software to run Windows inside of OS X.

I think it's interesting that Apple first said they wouldn't prevent hackers from dual booting XP on their new Intel based systems, but I think it's even more amazing that they are now providing their own official solution. You can bet there was some heated arguments at Apple's executive level to decide if this was a good idea or not.

Personally I think its a great idea. You can play games (#1 reason to still have a PC) in XP, then boot back to OS X for everything else. You can even run Windows on top of OS X using virtualization tools such as Parallels Desktop for Mac for those less demandning Windows apps. Apple has hinted that the next version of OS X, Leopard is going to introduce some even more native virtualization tools.

The argument against doing such a thing would be the fear that software developers would eventually stop writing software for the Mac platform thinking that Mac users can just dual boot Windows if they need to run their software. I don't think this will happen. The Mac developers are a dedicated bunch, they have been working on ports and exclusive Mac software for years now, knowing full well what the Mac market share is. Why would they stop now?

On the humor side of things, Joy of Tech has relased quite a few comics of Boot Camp, here, here and here.

Episode One

No, its not that Episode One, but rather Valve's latest chapter in the Half Life series. It was finally released today via Steam and at retail outlets. Since I'm a big fan of both the original HL and HL2, I already purchased a copy via Steam and am currently downloading it. I'll let you guys know how it is in a few days.
